School Mentoring Program

Sandy & Bailey

Sandy and BaileyMany students are referred to the School Mentoring Program for the extra help and one-to-one attention that a mentor can provide. Sometimes, though, it’s the mentors who learn a thing or two.

Josie, a high school senior, was cross-culturally matched with Darla, a third grader whose last name consisted of two Lakota words. Darla told Josie she knew what her last name meant, but when Josie asked if she knew any other Lakota words, Darla shook her head no. Josie, being a tech savvy high schooler, turned to the Internet and located a Lakota Language website. Together Darla and Josie learned the Lakota words for colors, family relations, animals and more. Josie had had little exposure to Native American culture, and said being matched with Darla “opened my eyes” to another culture and way of life.

Brittney, a third grader, struggled with simple addition. Her teacher asked her mentor, Pam, to write out problems for Brittney to work on. Pam, having attended elementary school during the early 60’s, started writing out problems in neat columns, as she had learned to do so many years ago. Brittney looked puzzled and asked “Why do you do it THAT way? I know an easier way!” Brittney proceeded to teach Pam how to do “string” math. It took a couple of problems before Pam caught on, but eventually she did. Pam started to say, “See Brittney, you can teach an old dog…” and Brittney smiled and exclaimed “New tricks!”

Sometimes the conversation turns to topics other than school. Bailey, a second grader, and her mentor, Sandy, were chatting about family when Bailey mentioned her brother playing games on his X Box. Sandy asked “So tell me, what exactly is an Xbox?” Bailey stopped coloring, shook her head, gave Sandy a look of consternation and said “Boy, we’ve got a LOT of work to do!”

Whether it’s learning a new way to add, being tutored in the latest technology or experiencing a new culture, mentors are learning right along with their School Buddies!
